COVID-19: Boots trials pharmacy video consultations

The new service follows on from a trail in Boots stores last year
The new service follows on from a trail in Boots stores last year

Boots is trialling an online pharmacy video consultation service to support patients who are self-isolating due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The trial is part of the multiple’s existing collaboration with digital healthcare provider LIVI. It will test how patients can remotely access a Boots pharmacist via the LIVI app for a face-to-face chat about their medicines and for general advice.

It follows the pilot of an online GP service that was trialled in two Boots stores in October 2019 and allows patients to have a GP video consultation on a tablet.

The two companies are now working together to see how this could be extended to pharmacists, the multiple said. It aims to reduce pressure on the NHS by “ensuring that customers maintain simple and safe access to healthcare” while at home.

“Improving access”

Richard Bradley, director of pharmacy for Boots UK, said: “With millions of patients self-isolating at home – particularly the elderly or those with underlying health conditions – access to expert health advice without having to travel to a pharmacy or GP surgery is even more crucial.”

Juliet Bauer, UK managing director for LIVI, added: “With our NHS facing unprecedented pressure, we are pleased to be opening up access to pharmacists on our platform and offering more people digital healthcare opportunities.”

Remote supervision is here....and there are still some deluded people on here that still think there is a future for community Pharmacists.

How different it is from just phoning the Pharmacy, other than just looking at faces? Are they showing other body parts too, to explain the problem? My understanding is that, even when they come in to the pharmacy, the Pharmacist hardly looks at the body parts apart from the obvious rash. But, hay ho, they are Boots and one step closer to the Remote Supervision.

Remote supervision! Remote supervision!

Other small step to justify the end point of a full remote supervision role out.

See the signs all. They're becoming glaringly obvious now

And how much are LIVI charging for this service? Where is that information in this article?

Kevin Western, Community pharmacist

and of course this wouldnt in any way be part of their ambition to have one Pharmacist supervising multiple Pharmacies. I am sure they will have a wonderful politically phrased press release to say why they are doing it but I would lay good money that that is what the real, ulterior motive is.
